Finest ale in the country

Bathams Bitter, regarded by some as one of the finest in the country, would never have been if it was not for the pernickety tastebuds of pub regulars in a quiet Worcestershire village, and the brewing skills of Mr D.B.A (Arthur) Batham.

We don't chase trends. No grapefruit-infused IPAs or gimmicks. Just well-kept, consistent, traditional cask ale brewed by a family who’s been at it for nearly 150 years.

From our original site in the Black Country to a line of pubs across the West Midlands, Bathams is as local as it gets. If you know, you know, and if you don’t, we’ll pour you a pint and let the beer speak for itself.

bathams beerology

Our brewery’s tucked away in the heart of Brierley Hill, no public tours, no flashy signage, just generations of know-how quietly doing the job right. We’ve been brewing the same proper ale for over a century with a recipe that hasn’t changed, and a few secrets we’re keeping to ourselves.

Since 1877

a bit of history

Started by Daniel Batham Sr. in 1877, we’ve been brewing in Brierley Hill ever since. Each generation of the Batham family has kept things running the way they should be: hands-on, no nonsense and focused on quality.

Our brewery is still on the same street. Our pubs still pull proper pints. And our reputation's been built one round at a time.

Our Reviews

We had an amazing experience. Getting a tour and trying their mild and bitter! We had the treat of meeting Matthew Batham and having him tell us about the history!

If you are looking for an example of... -a proper, no-frills, good old Black Country pub -really good ale -good home-cooked food -excellent value for money -a place where people can talk without the noise of background music ...then this is the place!

Bathams Brewery was established in 1877 and still run by the same family. The mild (3.5% abv) is a fruity malty with a sweetness, a really nice mild. The very popular best bitter is a fruity sweetish bitter with a nice dry hoppy finish (4.3 abv). The vine on the same site is one of 12 bathams pubs and one of the best known in the Black Country. The beers are well worth checking out, it's so nice to have a different beer from the mass produced ales that dominate most British pubs.

The Bull and Bladder has great beer with friendly welcoming cliental and staff. The front room was rammed before I finished my first pint. I managed to sample all 3 of the excellent Bathams beers available (Bitter, XXX and Mild) but sadly didn't have room for one the excellent looking cobs. Just be careful as the beers may have a higher alcohol content than stated as they are still fermenting in the keg. A pub & brewery that has existed a century before it became trendy to be one.

we're award winning

From CAMRA to local beer festivals, our pints don’t just taste good, they win stuff.
