Back in 1877, Daniel Batham Senior pulled his first pint as landlord of the White Horse in Cradley Heath. He probably didn’t expect it would turn into a brewing dynasty, but here we are, nearly 150 years and six generations later, still doing what we do best.
What started in one pub became a brewery. What started as one landlord became a full family operation. And what started as just a pint of mild became some of the most respected beer in the country.
We don’t mess with the recipe. Our bitter and mild are still brewed the proper way, in the heart of the Black Country, and you’ll still find them poured best in one of our 12 character-packed pubs (especially The Bull & Bladder, our brewery tap and unofficial headquarters).
People come from all over to try it. The locals already know. And yes, we’ve won more awards than we’ve got bar stools, but we don’t do it for the trophies. We do it for the regulars who know what a proper pint tastes like.
– originally written by local author John Richards in 1993. It’s worth a look, and we’re proud to keep his work alive.
Serving proper beer since 1877.
Still family-run.
Still local.
Still Bathams.
